For Will Butts, everyday life looks a little different than it does for most people. Will is missing ten toes and seven fingers, but that doesn’t stop him from doing the exact same activities as everyone else.
He enjoys reading, swimming, spending time outside with his neighbors, and running, especially track & field and cross country. Running is one of his favorite activities and sports, and he has made many friends over the years by participating in these activities. He goes all across America running. However, Will is trying to make a difference through another one of his hobbies: playing video games.
One summer, Will decided he wanted to see video game characters who looked like him. To accomplish this goal, Will wanted to ask video game companies, such as the developers of Fortnite, to include characters who look like him to promote inclusivity, particularly for disabled people. By including people with disabilities in games like Fortnite, Will and people with disabilities could be represented in popular media.
For Will, “what I’m trying to do is promote inclusion in video games because I want to be able to add people like me in those games, people who are different from your average, everyday human…Some of us might look differently, and some of us might think differently, but we are all humans, and every human should have representation in this world.”
