What is Southside’s Pay-a-Friend?

Southside’s Pay-a-Friend is a person-to-person (P2P) payment service available to almost anyone with a bank account in the US.  It is now easier than ever to pay a friend, even if he or she does not have a bank account with Southside Bank. 

How do I enroll in Southside’s Pay-a-Friend?

If you’re a Southside customer with a Southside checking account, follow these steps to setup Southside’s Pay-a-Friend service:

  1. Sign in to southside.com or Southside’s mobile app using your username and password.
  2. Select ‘Pay-a-Friend’ from the left hand navigation menu. (If you do not see this as an option within your personal online banking, contact our Customer Care team at 1.877.639.3511 or visit one of our convenient locations.)
  3. Read and accept the Southside Pay-a-Friend Service Agreement and Privacy Notice.
  4. Register your Southside Bank debit card.
  5. Select a friend from your contacts list (on your mobile device) or add your friend on the desktop.
  6. Send your payment! 

Is there a cost to send money using Pay-a-Friend?

Southside does not charge transaction fees to send money using Southside’s Pay-a-Friend. Please consult the Account Disclosures for any limitations or fees associated with the type of account you have.  Message and data rates from your mobile carrier may apply. 

We received an error of 'Card is not enabled' - what do we do?

All issuers of debit cards may not be 'fast payments enabled'. The recipient may enter their bank routing number and account number to receive the payment if their card cannot be used.

When will the money be available after I send it?

If the recipient, or person you are sending the funds to, accepts the payment using their US debit card, they will typically get the money within a few minutes of entering their debit card information.

If the recipient chooses to enter their banking account routing and account number, the payment will be sent via ACH.   If accepted before 4 pm CST, the recipient should receive their money within 1-2 business days in their bank account.  If the payment is accepted after 4 pm, then add an additional business day to allow for processing. 

What happens to the money if the recipient does not accept the payment?

The recipient of the payment has 10 days to accept the payment.  If the payment is not accepted, it will be returned to the account where the payment was initiated.  

What’s the difference between Southside Pay-a-Friend and Southside Online Bill Pay?

Southside’s Pay-a-Friend is a person-to-person (P2P) payment service that lets you send money to anyone with a US bank account using an email address or mobile number. 

Do I need to have Southside’s online banking or mobile app to use Southside’s Pay-a-Friend?

Yes, you’ll need to have access to your Southside accounts within online banking or through the mobile app.  

Are all Southside checking accounts eligible to use Pay-a-Friend?

All consumer and business accounts are eligible to send payments using Pay-a-Friend once the account has been opened 90 days. 

Are there limits to the amount of money I can send?

You can send up to $500 in a single transaction or up to $500 within a 24 hour period.  You can pay friends and family up to $5,000 during a month, or 30 day rolling period. 

Is Southside’s Pay-a-Friend secure?

Your security matters to us.  Our products and services are secure, and we work hard to help ensure your account information remains secure.  When you send money with Southside’s Pay a Friend, our recipients will not see your account number, and you will not see theirs.  Each payment uses the PIN associated with the debit card, making every transaction authorized and secure. 

Can I pay a friend that does not live in the United States?

You can pay anyone that has a bank debit card or account located in the US.  Payments cannot be made internationally, including to Canada or Mexico. 

Do I need to enter my PIN to authorize the transaction?

Yes, you will enter your personal identification number (PIN) when sending money through Pay-a-Friend.  Note that the PIN pad scrambles after you enter each digit.  If the PIN is entered incorrectly, your card may be locked.  Please contact Customer Care at 877.639.3511 for questions regarding your PIN. 

What do I do if I see a transaction I did not authorize?

Notify the bank immediately if you suspect unauthorized transactions, error, or suspicious activity at toll free 877.639.3511. 

Can I cancel a payment?

A payment can be cancelled if the recipient has not accepted it.  Contact our Customer Care at 877.639.3511 to cancel a Pay-a-Friend payment. 

Can I pay someone that is not in my contacts?

For security purposes, you should only pay persons that are known to you.  P2P transactions are real-time and similar to cash.  If you do not receive goods or services from the person you are paying, you will need to resolve the dispute with that person. 

Are Pay-a-Friend (P2P) payments safe?

P2P payments are real-time payments sent through authenticated and secure systems.  It is designed to be used to pay friends and persons that you trust.  It is not a good idea to send real-time funds to people you do not know, especially if the transaction involves the sale of goods and services (like event tickets and Craigslist items).  These payments can be high risk, and you may lose your money without getting what you paid for.
