In October 2022, Southside Serves partnered with Trinity Habitat for Humanity to participate in their Build-a-Home project in Fort Worth, which aimed to build a house for homeowner Katina Mayberry and her four children. Fifteen Southside Bank volunteers from the North Texas region worked alongside Habitat families and construction leaders to build a home for the Mayberry Family in the Hillside Morningside Neighborhood.
For Katina, owning a home would make a significant difference for her family since “currently, we live in a small apartment that is overcrowded. The rent keeps increasing and it has become unaffordable. Owning a home means the world to my family. It would be such a major accomplishment.”
As a participant in the Trinity Habitat for Humanity Building Strong Families and Neighborhoods Program, Katina is required to put in 200 sweat equity hours in place of a down payment for her new home. Her house payment will also help future Habitat families find their homes.
She was so happy to arrive and see all the volunteers onsite for the build that day, and Southside volunteers enjoyed working with and getting to know Katina and her family. By being a donor and encouraging Southside employees to volunteer, Southside Bank is investing in a family’s future and improving the community. This impact is evident, which is why the opportunity to volunteer and give back to the community is something Southside employees look forward to doing each year.
